Arthur "Art" DeWayne Hillman passed away peacefully on January 22, 2023 at the age of 95 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was born in Deshler, Nebraska to Caroline (Kietzke) and Emil Hillman on April 11, 1927 in the same room as his Mother was born in. Art was a WWII Navy veteran. He graduated from the University of NE in 1951 with a major in physical education. He lettered 4 years in gymnastics and was a life member of the "N" Club.
After graduation, Art became an elementary P.E. teacher in Lincoln. While teaching elementary P.E. he saw another elementary P.E. teacher, Beverly Wilder, waiting for the bus at 70th and Havelock so he asked if she needed a ride. She accepted and they were married June 8th, 1952 at First United Methodist Church. They celebrated 70 wonderful years of marriage in 2022.
Art was on the original staff at Lincoln Southeast High when it opened in 1955. He taught P.E. and coached gymnastics retiring in 1989 as a counselor. Art & Bev joined Grace Lutheran Church in 1955 and have been active members ever since participating in many leadership positions and activities.
Art is survived by his loving wife, Bev Hillman and their four daughters, Becky & Garry Martin, Sarah & Doug Krueger, Rachel & Steve Mason, Martha & Joe Hiltner; 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Visitation with family present will be 6-8 pm on Thursday, Jan. 26, at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home at 4040 A St., Lincoln, NE. Services will be on Friday, Jan. 27, at Grace Lutheran Church, 2225 Washington St., Lincoln, at 11 a.m. Private burial will be held before the services. Lunch will follow as the family invites you to share your memories of Art with them. Memorials may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation, 2225 Washington St., Lincoln, NE 68502 or to Lincoln Southeast High School Athletic Hall of Fame 2930 S. 37th St., Lincoln, NE 68506.
